Nitrous Oxide Sedation

Available under sedation

A gentle inhaled sedation that helps anxious patients receive dental care in comfort.

A patient relaxing, laughing

Nitrous oxide sedation (sometimes called "happy air" or relative analgesia) is a safe, mild form of sedation inhaled through a small nosepiece. It takes effect within minutes and wears off completely within minutes of finishing the appointment — patients can drive home themselves.

It is ideal for patients who:

  • Find dental treatment stressful or have had difficult experiences in the past.
  • Have a strong gag reflex.
  • Need a longer appointment they would prefer to feel relaxed through.

When you phone the practice, mention that you would like to discuss sedation. We will allow extra time at your first appointment to talk through how it works and whether it is suitable for you.
